Il film di Rossellini, Stromboli del 1949, interpretato da Ingrid Bergman, ha portato all’isola una tale notorietà da farla diventare, negli anni, da povera isola di pescatori e contadini, meta nel periodo estivo di un gran numero di turisti, tutti accomunati dallo stesso amore per l’isola che “brontola”. Iddu è il nome con cui viene chiamato dagli isolani il vulcano, famoso in tutto il mondo per le sue caratteristiche eruzioni, che dà il nome all’attività, detta stromboliana, di altri vulcani. Stromboli ai primi del Novecento contava circa tremila abitanti che si sostenevano essenzialmente con l’agricoltura e la pesca.
Il vulcano era per tre quarti completamente coltivato. L’afflusso dei turisti, sollecitando la creazione di infrastrutture capaci di sostenerlo, ha provocato con l’abbandono delle attività agricole anche un generale oblio delle tradizioni e dei costumi locali.

The Rossellini film, 1949’s Stromboli, featuring Ingrid Bergman, has brought such notoriety to the island as to make it over the years a poor fishers’ and farmers’ island, destination for a large number of tourists in the Summer season, all linked by the same love for the “seething” island. Iddu is the name the islanders give to the volcano, famous all over the world for its characteristic eruptions, giving a name to other volcanoes’ activities, called Strombolian. In the early 1900’s Stromboli held around three thousand inhabitants who essentially maintained themselves with agriculture and fishing. The volcano was three quarters fully tended. The influx of tourists, soliciting the creation of infrstructures able to hold them, has caused a general oblivion to the local traditions and customs along with abandonment of the agricultural activities.
